O’ahu Food

Foods we wanted to try while there:

Spam Musubi - just my husband wanted to try it. He liked it, the rest of us wished he hadn’t eaten it in the car! We weren’t fans of the smell.

Ice Cream Bananas - we didn’t like them, maybe ours weren’t ripe enough?

Ube - we tried an ube butter mochi that was not great, but we did have a slice of an ube chantilly cake that was okay.

Loco Moco - just my husband wanted to try it & he liked it

Açaí Bowls - So good at the road side food truck we found. Not good at a shop we found later.

Malasadas -Some were good, some were odd.

Shave Ice - Yum!

Good to know:

Almost everywhere we went, the food came with sides of white rice and macaroni salad.

The food cost more than we thought it would; and we thought it’d be pricey.

I personally thought quite a bit of the food we had in Hawaii was pretty greasy. Maybe if I liked sea food more that wouldn’t be as big of a problem. I did really like the Thai and other Asian places we got to eat. I had the best spring rolls I’ve ever had while there. It was at a food truck on the North Shore but I can’t remember what it was called. I do know it was in Haleiwa.

Islander Drive Inn

We tried the garlic chicken, fried rice, salmon, a hamburger and a Loco Moco meal. We were all happy with our food. I’m pretty sure the Loco Moco was hamburger patties topped with sunny side up eggs, all on top of rice and covered in gravy.

Food Trucks

Near our hotel there were always at least 3 or 4 food trucks. I liked everything I tried from the Thai (Ying’s Thai Cuisine) one & the Mexican (Mami’s Empanadas) one that were nearby.

Liliha Bakery

We had some yummy treats here:  an oreo cupcake, a chocolate donut, green tea cake roll up with chocolate filling, a pineapple cream croissant and a blueberry danish. They were all good.

Leonard’s Bakery

We went to a food truck they had. We tried all 6 varieties of the Malasadas (Portuguese Donuts). I thought the sweet & sour one was weird, the coconut cream one was okay and so was the cream filled one. The chocolate filled one I thought was good, but the best two, in my opinion, were the sugar one and the cinnamon sugar one.

Blue Ocean

It was kind of a permanent food truck I think. It had some tables to sit at. They had a variety of things. Between the 5 of us we tried BBQ chicken, spicy orange chicken, spaghetti & meatballs, a hamburger, salmon and a steak kabob. We were all happy with our meals.

Açaí Bowls

We got one from a roadside food truck that was amazing. The sign said Rukabowl over the choices. We had one that was açai and one that was a dragon fruit base (consistency of ice cream)! We liked both, but the açai one we liked better.

Then we got one from a shop that was not good a few days later. It was more like flavored crushed ice.

Ululani’s

We went here to get Shave Ice. It was really good! It was like a snow cone, but smoother and better.
